We’re investigating murder of Nekede lecturer, friend: Police

The Imo Police Command says it has commenced an investigation into Monday’s killing of two persons in Owerri, including a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede.
Its spokesman, Orlando Ikeokwu, said the command got the report about the killing and had initiated an investigation.
On Thursday, the polytechnic’s spokesperson, Ever Nwosu, said Stephen Okonye, a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, was shot by gunmen.
Mr. Okonye was killed along with his friend, Chimaobi Nwako, a member of Rain of Life Bible Church, where the lecturer also served as an assistant pastor.
Mr. Okonye hailed from Delta.
“It is a very sad development and we are already investigating the circumstances surrounding the death,” Mr. Nwosu said.
It was learnt that Mr. Okonye was returning from a church programme when he was attacked at Naze Junction.
A student who was also shot survived the attack.
The Commander of the 211 Quick Response Group of the Nigerian Air Force, Group Capt. Elisha Bindul, whose office is close to the scene of the attack, said they found the lecturer’s body in a Lexus car.
“It was about 8:00 pm on Monday when we heard gunshots. We got to the scene a few minutes later but the assailants took advantage of a traffic jam to attack their victims and escape.
“We alerted the police, who are currently on top of the situation,” Mr. Bindul said.
