WHO donates materials to curb Adamawa cholera outbreak
The World Health Organisation has donated intervention materials to curb the cholera outbreak in Adamawa state.
The donated items included oral rehydration solution (ORS), Ringer’s lactate solution (RL), water guard, aqua tabs, industrial boots, heavy-duty gloves, latex gloves, canulae, knapsack sprayers, IV sets, Jerricans, posters, face mask, banners, among others.
In a statement, the WHO Adamawa coordinator, Sameeh Omoleke, assured the government that the global health body would continue to support the state to achieve universal health care coverage.
Mr Omoleke said, “The donated materials will complement the activities of the government in stopping the transmission of the disease.”
Laori Celine, the Adamawa public health director, during the donation ceremony, commended the WHO, stating that it has always been supportive uplifting residents’ health status.
“We do appreciate WHO for this and other interventions in the health sector, especially in the ongoing response against cholera outbreak,” said Ms Celine. “WHO continues to lead the cholera response by coordinating other partners and has provided commodities to sustain tackling the disease.
Suleiman Bashir Saidu, chairman of Adamawa’s Primary Healthcare Development Agency, assured WHO that the state would put the materials to good use.
“On behalf of the Adamawa state government, I want to assure you that we will make use of these materials effectively. We will deploy every structure within the health sector to get out of the situation,” Mr Saidu said.
Nigeria has recorded hundreds of cholera cases since the beginning of 2021, with Adamawa recording 1,783, with 54 deaths as of December 23, 2021.
