The Road Safety Officers Wives Association, Kwara State chapter on Thursday cautioned drivers to obey traffic rules and avoid speeding to prevent accidents in the state.

 The state Chairperson, ROSOWA, Iboro Sokunbi, made this known during the sensitisation of drivers at Maraba Motor Park, Ilorin in Kwara.

 According to Mrs Sokunbi, nobody is invisible and so accidents can be avoided by drivers who should pay attention to all road users and passers-by.

 She said, “Drivers should please stop acting like superman while driving, like speeding, eating, drinking and even mothers should stop nursing babies while driving. If you see under-age drivers on the road, try and correct them and report to appropriate authorities to avoid problems or accidents which may eventually affect the public. Drivers need to always remember that their families are waiting for them at home, so they should abide by road rules while driving.’’ 

Also, the state Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Muftau Irekeola, said that failure to abide by road instructions had resulted in many fatal accidents, and loss of lives and property.

According to Mr Irekeola, drivers should reduce their speed, especially when travelling because life for each person is only one and does not have a duplicate.

 He said, “We don’t want people to die in accidents anymore, if at all there is an accident. This can be avoided by the drivers, if they reduce their speed, pay attention to road signs and concentrate while driving.’’ 

Similarly, Chairman of Road Transport Employers Association, Isiaka Alowo-Aleyan, Maraba Motor Park, Ilorin, said that drivers were more enlightened and had stopped speeding.

 Mr Alowo-Aleyan, represented by his Secretary, Olayinka Mogaji, however, thanked the organisers of the programme and promised to relay the message to other drivers.

 The event was attended by wives of the Nigerian Army; Nigerian Immigration Service; Nigeria Security and Civil Defence officers, market women and others.
