Woman sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for hemp trafficking
A Federal High Court, Ibadan Division, on Thursday, sentenced one Sadiya Afolabi to a term of three years at the correctional centre for dealing in 900g of cannabis sativa.
Justice Nkeonye Maha convicted and sentenced Afolabi after she pleading guilty to a two-count charge of unlawful possession and dealing in banned narcotic.
The charges were preferred against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The court held that it was satisfied that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubts.
The court held that it considered Afolabi’s plea for mercy, being a first time offender who said she was ready to turn a new leaf if given a second chance.
“To serve as deterrence to others, Afolabi is sentenced to three years in prison for each of the two offences. However, sentences shall run concurrently. The weed exhibit found in her possession shall be destroyed by the NDLEA,” she said
In the charge, the prosecutor, A.A. Balogun, said that the convict committed the offence on February 15, 2024, at Oje in Ibadan.
Ms Balogun said that the NDLEA operatives arrested the convict for being in possession of a sack containing 900g of cannabis sativa.
The prosecutor said that her arrest followed the receipt of intelligence reports.
The offences contravene the provisions of section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Law of the Federation 2004.
