Woman sues daughters-in-law over late son’s inheritance

An elderly woman, Bara’atu Muhammad, on Wednesday dragged her daughters-in-law, Hauwa Aliyu and Aisha Suleiman, to a Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin-Gari, Kaduna, over her late son’s inheritance.
The complainant prayed the court to assist in sharing the inheritance of a house left by the deceased, Yahya Idris, located at Babban Saura, in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State
Earlier, the complainant said through her lawyer, M.S Abdullahi that her son died on September 26, 2021, leaving behind two wives, seven children and his parents.
On their part, counsel to the two defendants, Hassan Kabir, said that the inheritance was shared in 2022 by a scholar, Habibu Mahmud.
The counsel said that the house was divided into different parts among the deceased’s parents, wives and children.
According to him, the family later discussed and agreed to leave the house for the deceased children while the mother and wives would be compensated with the gratuity of the deceased.
He explained that they signed an agreement on July 8, 2022, stating that they would pay the money when the gratuity comes.
He said that the money had yet to be released.
The court asked the defendants to provide witnesses which they did .
The defendant’s counsel, however, prayed the court to give them time to settle out of court so as not to cause more division among members of the family.
The judge, Yakubu Abdullahi, advised them to invite a cleric they respect to intervene and preach to them during the settlement.
He adjourned the case to August 3 for both parties to present the result of the settlement.
