A transgender woman, Isla Bryson, faced four charges on her first day of trial before Judge Lord Scott of the High Court in Glasgow, Scotland.

Formerly known as Adam Graham, 31-year-old Bryson from Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, pleaded guilty to two of the four charges.

Ms Bryson is accused of raping two women, one in Clydebank in 2016 and another in Drumchapel, Glasgow, in 2019.

She is also accused of telling the alleged victim in 2016 to wash the sheets and threatening the woman’s family to destroy evidence.

The accused denies the charges and has lodged special defences claiming the sex was consensual.

She also denies a further charge of punching the second alleged victim.

One of the victims told a court she was “so scared” when she was allegedly raped by a man who now identifies as a transgender woman.

Defence attorney Edward Targowski KC said his client will lodge a special defence of consent for two.

The court heard in agreed evidence that Bryson now identifies as a transgender woman and was previously known by the “dead name” Adam Graham.

It was revealed a letter from the accused’s doctor, Craig Napier, dated August 5, 2022, confirmed that Bryon was “currently receiving the maximum recommended doses of Spironolactone and Finasteride” – a hormone prescription from Glasgow’s specialist sexual health service Sandyford Clinic.
