The World Bank says it will invest in Gombe’s irrigation system to strengthen food security, water management, and climate resilience.

Chakib Jenane, regional director for Sustainable Development for Western and Central Africa, confirmed the plan on Thursday  during a visit to Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau.

Mr Jenane said the bank’s renewed commitment reflected Gombe’s progress. 

“We are impressed by what we have seen here. Your achievements encourage us to do more,” he said.

He led a World Bank team assessing ongoing projects and confirmed that new support would focus on agriculture through the SPIN project.

He explained that SPIN would expand irrigation. “This operation will directly support farmers and improve water use,” he said.

Mr Jenane added that discussions had begun on a future programme centred on agriculture, particularly agribusiness.

He said witnessing developments in the state would help the Bank “move forward and achieve more results together”.

The team reviewed progress on SURWASH, L-PRES, and ACReSAL. Jenane said the visit allowed them to “see concretely on the ground what has been achieved”.

He added that the tour also helped them understand local needs and identify areas requiring deeper support.

Mr Jatau praised the Bank’s role in addressing environmental challenges. “Your interventions have saved vital infrastructure from erosion,” he said.

He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the partnership, noting that it would help bridge infrastructure gaps and improve livelihoods.

The SPIN project, valued at $500 million, is supported by the World Bank. It aims to deliver major multi-purpose infrastructure for irrigation and hydropower generation nationwide.
