World Child Labour Day: ACJL calls for stronger action against child exploitation in Kaduna

The Kaduna Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) support working group has called for renewed commitment and stronger enforcement of laws to eliminate child labour and protect children from exploitation.
The chairman of the group, Terngu Gwar, made the call in a statement on Friday in Kaduna to commemorate the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour.
Mr Gwar described child labour as one of the most serious violations of children’s rights, noting that many children across communities were still being denied access to education, exposed to hazardous conditions and subjected to abuse.
According to him, such practices undermine children’s development and threaten society’s social and economic progress.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to enjoy childhood, access quality education, and grow in a safe and supportive environment.
“The protection of children’s rights remains a collective responsibility that requires stronger institutions, effective implementation of laws and sustained public awareness,” he said.
The chairman stated that stakeholders involved in strengthening criminal justice administration in Kaduna State recognised the need for coordinated efforts among government agencies, civil society organisations, traditional and religious institutions, parents and communities to address the challenge.
He noted that the administration of the criminal justice framework provides mechanisms for ensuring accountability in cases involving child exploitation and abuse.
Mr Gwar urged relevant authorities to intensify investigations and prosecution of offenders while ensuring that child victims receive protection and support and are shielded from further trauma during legal processes.
He further called for greater attention to the root causes of child labour, including poverty, limited access to quality education, social inequality, insecurity and harmful social practices.
According to him, addressing these underlying factors is essential to securing a better future for children.
He also urged residents of Kaduna State to remain vigilant and promptly report cases of child exploitation and abuse to the appropriate authorities.
“As we commemorate this year’s World Day Against Child Labour, we must reaffirm our commitment to building a society where children are protected, justice is accessible, and opportunities for growth are guaranteed for all.
“Ending child labour requires collective action and sustained commitment from all segments of society,” he said.
The World Day Against Child Labour is observed annually on June 12 to raise awareness and mobilise efforts toward ending all forms of child labour globally.
