World Cup Qualifier: FG summons Jose Peseiro over Super Eagles’ performance

Sports Minister John Enoh has summoned Super Eagles’ coach, Jose Peseiro, to a meeting following the team’s performances in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Addressing the press at a media parley in Abuja on Wednesday, Enoh expressed concerns that the team was “not meeting” Nigerans’ expectations.
“As a minister, I am concerned that the Nigeria national team is not delivering or meeting up with our expectations,” said the minister. “I’ve had to request that the coach (Peseiro) be summoned.”
Some Nigerians and football stakeholders have been calling for the sack of Peseiro, whom the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) currently owes months salary. They sought his dismissal over poor run of form since last year, with six wins and six defeats from 15 matches.
However, Enoh said he understands Nigerians’ frustration about the Eagles’ performance but stated any decision about Peseiro’s future must be taken with caution as the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is already close.
“The Africa Cup of Nations is so close that we need to be careful in what decisions we make, but the next qualification rounds for the World Cup, the next match is in June, so it gives us more time to take decisions going forward,” the minister said.
Enoh said he met with the NFF’s president, secretary, and technical department about the team’s poor performance.
He added, “What we came out of that is that I’ve had to request that the coach (Peseiro) be summoned, and I think at some point next week there’s going to be an engagement with him.
“All of that is trying to respond to the outcome of these matches, especially the World Cup qualifying games.”
