World Cup Qualifier: Zimbabwe hold Super Eagles to 1-1 draw in Uyo

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup took a hit as the Super Eagles were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe despite a late opener from Victor Osimhen.
The Napoli striker finally broke the deadlock in the second half, but a late equaliser from Tawanda Chirewa denied Nigeria a crucial victory.
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle named an unchanged lineup from the team’s 2-0 win over Rwanda.
Nigeria started brightly, with Osimhen forcing two early saves from the Zimbabwean goalkeeper, while Bright Osayi-Samuel was also denied in a one-on-one situation.
Despite Nigeria’s dominance, Zimbabwe remained disciplined and dangerous on the counter. Walter Musona came close in the 15th minute, and Khama Billiat nearly broke through before Stanley Nwabali rushed off his line to clear the danger.
The first half ended goalless, with Nigeria frustrated after Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi missed promising chances. The Super Eagles also had a strong penalty appeal waved away after Osimhen appeared to be fouled in the box.
Nigeria resumed the second half on the front foot, creating several chances but failing to convert.
Simon, Lookman, and Iwobi all missed the target from promising positions. Chelle introduced Tolu Arokodare for Samuel Chukwueze, hoping to break the deadlock.
The breakthrough finally came in the 73rd minute. Simon floated a ball to Arokodare, who flicked it into the path of Ola Aina. The Nottingham Forest full-back delivered a pinpoint cross, and Osimhen rose highest to head home, scoring his 26th international goal.
However, when it seemed Nigeria would secure all three points, Zimbabwe hit back. Chirewa, coming off the bench, capitalised on a defensive lapse to fire past Nwabali, silencing the Super Eagles’ celebrations.
Despite late pressure from Nigeria, Zimbabwe held firm, forcing the visitors to settle for a disappointing draw.
The result leaves Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes hanging in the balance, with more work needed in the upcoming fixtures. Osimhen’s record-breaking goal was a bright spot, but the team must be more clinical as they continue their campaign.
