Woro Attacks: UNICEF donates 400 wash, dignity kits to victims

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has handed over 400 wash and dignity kits to the Kwara government for victims of the terrorist attacks in the Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area.
In February 2026, terrorists attacked the Woro community, where several inhabitants were gruesomely murdered, including pregnant women and children.
Speaking at the handover of the items on Saturday in Ilorin, the chief of the field office at UNICEF Kaduna, Gerida Birukila, explained that a team from the state visited the community to assess the extent of the destruction.
Ms Birukila mourned the departed souls and called on the authorities to expedite action on negotiations for the release of those abducted.
According to her, the items were donated to mitigate the effects of the crisis on the victims.
Ms Birukila also said that another batch of 1,000 wash and dignity kits would be sent to the state for donation to the victims in the coming week.
“An emergency health team has been established and is looking after people. But it is not enough because of what is happening.
“Most of the parents and the people there said what they really want is their loved ones to come back.
“We really call on those who took the community members to release them, especially the young ones and pregnant women who are in captivity and need care. That is necessary for them to deliver safely. So, we hope that they will heed this,” she appealed.
Ms Birukila further appealed to philanthropists, corporate bodies, and others to support members of the Woro community.
Responding, the state Commissioner for Water Resources, Yunusa Lade, said the donation would bring succour and address the problems of the victims of the Woro attacks.
While expressing appreciation to UNICEF for the donation, Mr Lade urged other global agencies to emulate the gesture, as the government cannot shoulder the responsibility alone.
In his remarks, the general manager of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), Olufemi Oladipo, described the donation of the kits as a welcome development.
Mr Oladipo seized the opportunity to solicit UNICEF’s support for his agency to provide potable water to rural communities in the state.
He also appealed for increased support from international agencies and private individuals to help alleviate the suffering of people in the Woro community.
Some items donated by UNICEF included bathing soaps, laundry detergent, nail clippers, washing lines, safety pins, plastic soap containers, and towels.
