The Yobe House of Assembly has opened an investigation into  allegations of misconduct among health workers and a critical shortage of doctors in state-run hospitals.

Speaker Chiroma Mashio announced the decision after the assembly resumed from its annual recess.

This legislative action, he said, follows concerns over staff conduct and personnel deficits that threaten to undermine the state’s healthcare system.

Mr Mashio said the committee would be chaired by the deputy speaker, Ya’u Usman Dachia. Other members are Ahmed Dumbol, Kachalla Maina, Sanda Bade, Saminu Lawan and Mohammed Ali.

He said that, notwithstanding achievements recorded in the health sector under Governor Mai Mala Buni, the allegations demanded legislative scrutiny.

In a related development, the assembly gave accelerated consideration to a bill seeking to establish the Yobe Senior Secondary Education Board.

The bill, presented by the executive, passed second reading and was referred to the House Standing Committee on Basic and Secondary Education for further action.

The assembly also received two executive bills seeking to establish an Urban and Regional Planning Authority.
