Yobe govt initiates cash-for-rent scheme for flood victims

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency has offered financial support to 102 households displaced by the recent flood in Potiskum.
Its executive secretary, Mohammad Goje, disclosed this in a statement in Damaturu on Monday.
He said the gesture would enable the displaced families to pay for two months’ rent in safe and dignified shelter in their communities.
Mr Goje said the displaced families were linked with local agents to assist them in accessing the accommodation.
The YOSEMA helmsman said the households, comprising 600 individuals, were taking temporary shelter at Sabon Gari Primary School, following the destruction of their houses by flood.
He said the agency would provide free meals, blankets, mats, soaps, buckets, kettles, mosquito nets, and detergents to the affected persons.
Mr Goje said the agency has also completed the registration of seven out of the 21 communities affected by the disaster as of Saturday, August 16, adding that the validation of the others was on course.
He stated that the registered communities comprised 361 households and 2,634 individuals.
The executive secretary commended development partners, including UNICEF, WHO, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Centre for Civilians in Conflict.
Others are the International Organisation for Migration, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the North-East Development Commission, and security agencies.
One person died, and many houses were destroyed or submerged in Potiskum following a flood triggered by a heavy downpour on Saturday.
