Yobe spends N800 million on 316 students to receive foreign education

The Yobe government says it spent N800 million on 316 students to receive foreign education in different institutions between 2019 and 2021.
On Monday, Governor Mai Mala-Buni announced the approval of sponsorship of 32 students to Al Azhar University, Cairo, to study Qur’an and Arabic Language, despite Yobe State University and the Federal University Gashua offering the courses.
Abubakar Kagu, the Executive Secretary of the Yobe Scholarship Board, disclosed this while addressing journalists on Mr Mala-Buni’s two years in office.
He noted that 233 Yobe indigenes were sponsored to India while 83 others are studying in Sudan, Ukraine, Uganda, the UK, among other institutions across the globe.
Locally, Mr Kagu said the board awarded scholarships to 109 law graduates studying at the Nigerian Law School and paid N1.5 million to each of 10 lecturers of the state’s School of Nursing, Damaturu, undergoing master’s degree programmes.
The executive secretary added there were 38,000 students of state origin in over 60 universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.
Mr Kagu announced that Sao Tome and Principe had agreed to offer scholarships to 100 undergraduate students in local universities as part of the Nigeria-Sao Tome and Principe Joint Development Authority initiative.
