Young Frankenstein’s actor, Teri Garr, dies at 79

Teri Garr, the beloved American actress known for her comedic timing and memorable roles in films such as ‘Young Frankenstein’ and ‘Tootsie’ passed away on Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles

Her publicist, Heidi Schaeffer, confirmed that the cause of death was complications from multiple sclerosis, a condition Garr had battled for years.

Born on December 11, 1944, in Lakewood, Ohio, Ms Garr began her career as a dancer, performing in TV shows and background roles in films.

Her big break came in 1974 when she starred as Inga, the quirky lab assistant, in Mel Brooks’ ‘Young Frankenstein.’

The film became a comedy classic, and Garr’s performance was widely praised for its humour and endearing quality.

In 1982, she earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Dustin Hoffman’s on-screen love interest in ‘Tootsie,’, cementing her status as a top-tier Hollywood actress.

She was also well-known for her roles in ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ (1977), ‘Mr. Mom’ (1983), and ‘After Hours’ (1985).

Beyond her film work, she made frequent television appearances on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson’ and ‘Late Night with David Letterman,’, where her playful banter with hosts became a fan favorite.

In 2002, the actress disclosed publicly that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; a condition she had lived with privately for nearly two decades.

Despite her diagnosis, Garr continued to work and became a vocal advocate for MS awareness, using her platform to raise funds for research and support for those affected by the disease.

Her resilience in the face of MS made her an inspirational figure to many, and she often spoke candidly about the challenges she faced while continuing her career in the entertainment industry.

Ms Garr’s death marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned over four decades, leaving an indelible mark on Hollywood.
