Enraged youths have reportedly burnt a divisional police station in Ifon, the headquarters of Ose LGA of Ondo State, Peoples Gazette learnt on Sunday.

The incident followed the allegation that a young boy, whose identity has not been revealed, died in police custody after he was allegedly subjected to torture.

Sources said the boy’s death angered the youths who stormed the police station, overpowered the officers on duty, and set the building on fire.

“What really happened was that some young boys in the community engaged in a fight on Friday night, which was Valentine’s Day, and the incident was reported to the police.

“The police had to wade in and arrest two boys. The next day, which was Saturday, we learned that one of them had died in police custody because he was tortured while the other fell into a coma before he was rushed to the hospital.

“The development got the other boys who happened to be their friends angry, and they moved to the divisional police station chasing away the officers before setting it on fire,” one of the sources who spoke in confidence told The Gazette on Sunday.

Police spokesperson in the state, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, who confirmed the incident in a brief chat, said the Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi and other top security chiefs in the state have visited the community.

Mrs Odunlami-Omisanya added that a marching order had been given to the security agents to restore normalcy and peace to the community, adding that details of the visit would soon be released to the public.
