The Zamfara Technical Committee on Breastfeeding Milk and Supplement has organised a one-day sensitisation programme for nursing mothers to mark the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week.

The event took place on Wednesday at the King Fahad Women and Children Hospital, Gusau. It called on stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to breastfeeding as a vital intervention.

The global theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems’.

Chairman of the Zamfara BMS Technical Committee, Abduljalal Manzo, said breastfeeding is not only a mother’s responsibility, but a collective societal duty.

He noted that breastfeeding serves as a child’s first immunisation, laying the foundation for health and cognitive development, while reducing infections and malnutrition risks.

Mr Manzo added that breastfeeding also lowers the risk of non-communicable diseases later in life, benefiting both children and mothers alike.

“For mothers, it reduces chances of certain cancers and supports quicker postpartum recovery,” he explained.

He emphasised that, beyond its health benefits, breastfeeding is a fundamental human right. Sustainable systems must include structures and policies that protect and promote breastfeeding.

Mr Manzo said society must ensure maternity protection through laws that let women breastfeed without risking job loss or income reduction. He called for stronger health systems to ensure baby-friendly care and professional counselling for mothers.

He urged communities to dispel harmful myths, especially those that cause colostrum, the early, nutritious milk, to be discarded.

Mr Manzo emphasised the need to train birth attendants, nurses, and health workers with accurate knowledge of breastfeeding and relevant tools. He also called for support from men and families to promote breastfeeding at home.

Mr Manzo emphasised the need to strengthen partnerships among ministries, NGOs, faith-based groups, the media, and academic institutions to support breastfeeding. He acknowledged Zamfara’s governor’s wife, Huriyya Lawal, for her commitment to maternal and child health, in spite of her absence.

“Her continued advocacy and support through several initiatives were recognised and appreciated by the committee,” he said.

The presence of development partners, NGOs, and faith-based organisations at the event showed a shared commitment to the cause.

“Let us make this week more than a ceremony. Let it spark real action and policy. Let each informed mother today become tomorrow’s breastfeeding advocate in her community,” Mr Manzo said.
