2026 World Cup: With Ghanaian-American father, Japanese mother, who is goalkeeper Zion Suzuki?

At 1.90 metres tall, United States-born Zion Suzuki is the tallest goalkeeper to represent Japan’s Samurai Blue at the FIFA World Cup, as he is part of the team competing at the ongoing tournament in North America.
Suzuki has attracted widespread attention among football fans because of his dark complexion and distinctive East Asian facial features. He has also earned praise for his outstanding goalkeeping ability.
He was born in New Jersey in 2002 to a Ghanaian father and a Japanese mother, which explains his combination of Black and Asian features.
According to reports, his parents named him Zion after the biblical Mount Zion in Israel. Despite being born in the United States, he did not grow up there, as his parents moved to Japan when he was young.
Suzuki first came to the attention of the global football audience in 2023 when he was heavily linked with a move from Urawa Red Diamonds to Premier League side Manchester United during that summer’s transfer window.
However, the deal did not materialise, and he was instead sent on loan to Belgian Pro League club Sint-Truidense VV soon afterwards. A year later, he joined Serie A side Parma on a permanent deal for a fee of around €7.5 million.
The 23-year-old began his professional career at Urawa Red Diamonds, becoming the second-youngest player to sign a first-team contract with the Japanese club at the age of 16 years and five months.
He subsequently made his senior debut in a J.League Cup match against Shonan Bellmare in 2021. Suzuki enjoyed a successful spell with Urawa Red Diamonds, winning the AFC Champions League, the Emperor’s Cup and the Japanese Super Cup.
At the international level, Suzuki was eligible to represent Ghana through his father, the United States by birth, and Japan through his mother.
His international future was effectively decided at a young age, as he represented Japan from the Under-15 level through the various youth teams before making his senior debut for the Asian nation in 2022.
Suzuki has since made 28 appearances for the Japan national team. He has also won the EAFF E-1 Football Championship with Japan.
In 2024, he was subjected to racial abuse on social media after Japan lost to Iraq at the Asian Cup, an incident that head coach Hajime Moriyasu said left him “ashamed and horrified”.
In response to the situation, Suzuki decried the targeted discrimination, stating, “I accept criticism related to my work, but not insults because of my skin color. It’s that simple.”
