2027: Local government commission chair urges dialogue over post-primary election crises in Lagos

Ahmed Seriki, chairman of the Lagos State Local Government Service Commission, has urged political parties to strengthen internal structures and dialogue to address post-primary election crises ahead of 2027.
Mr Seriki said in Lagos on Sunday that such disputes stemmed from weak internal democracy, candidate imposition, and a lack of transparency in candidate selection.
According to him, internal democracy remains the foundation of a healthy political system and should not be sacrificed for personal interests.
He described the irregularities that characterised the just-concluded primaries of many political parties as unhealthy.
Mr Seriki said parties must avoid repeating past mistakes by ensuring strict adherence to rules during future primaries.
“Political parties must ensure that their constitutions, guidelines and electoral procedures are strictly adhered to during the conduct of future primaries.
“When party members perceive the process as transparent and fair, it strengthens confidence in the leadership and promotes unity within the party,” he said.
The commission chairman said allegations of imposition of candidates, manipulation of voters’ lists, and lack of transparency during the last primaries of parties had generated discontent among party faithful.
He said parties must always create a level playing field for all aspirants and guarantee equal opportunities for members seeking elective positions.
“Party leaders must avoid actions capable of undermining the collective will of members.
“Internal democracy thrives when stakeholders are allowed to participate freely in decision-making processes without intimidation or undue influence,” Mr Seriki said.
He advocated regular stakeholder engagement, effective dispute resolution and greater inclusion of youths and women to deepen democratic culture within parties.
Mr Seriki urged aggrieved aspirants to use internal mechanisms for redress and place party interest above personal ambitions.
He expressed optimism that adherence to democratic principles would contribute to peaceful elections and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions ahead of 2027.
