The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River says no fewer than 32 persons died from road traffic crashes across the state between January and September.

The sector commander, Innocent Etuk, disclosed this at a town hall meeting in Calabar on Friday.

Speaking on the theme “Take Responsibility for Your Safety, Avoid Distracted Driving,” Mr Etuk said the meeting aimed to campaign against reckless driving during the Ember Months.

The FRSC official said that out of the 32 victims, 27 were males, four were females, and one was a minor.

He urged motorists in the state to adhere strictly to traffic rules in the interest of their safety and that of other road users.

Mr Etuk further stated that during the period, 200 people were injured in 92 reported road traffic cases, which involved 406 people.

He stated that the FRSC had increased personnel deployment across the state to manage the expected traffic surge during the Calabar Carnival and other activities.

“I urge all road users to adopt a paradigm shift in their driving culture and take personal responsibility for their safety.

“Vehicle repairers, motor park managers, drivers, and passengers all have a stake in maintaining road safety. Unsafe vehicles, reckless driving, and overloading are major threats.

“Motorists are cautioned against using mobile phones while driving. Arguments with passengers, alcohol consumption, and eating while driving are to be avoided. Driving requires 100 per cent concentration,” he said.
