Anambra: Bus driver, pedestrian killed in multiple crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra said a crash involving four vehicles at Upper Iweka by Awka-Onitsha Expressway killed a driver and a pedestrian.
Sector commander Adeoye Irelewuyi confirmed the crash on Thursday.
Mr Irelewuyi said the crash, which occurred on Wednesday evening, could be attributed to brake failure and loss of control.
“The fatal crash involved a Mercedes Benz truck with registration number XJ444NSH, a Mercedes Benz 190 car with registration number HAL585RF, a Suzuki bus with registration number RLU799XC and a Mitsubishi bus with registration number SSM892ZR,” explained the FRSC official. “Eyewitness report indicates that the brake of the Mercedes Benz truck, fully loaded with tiles and other building materials failed, the driver lost control and rammed into three stationary vehicles and two pedestrians, and crashed.”
The FRSC further disclosed that four persons, three male adults and a female adult, were involved in the crash.
“FRSC rescue team from Upper Iweka outpost command rushed the victims to Toronto Hospital, Onitsha, where a male adult and a female pedestrian were confirmed dead and their bodies deposited at the hospital morgue,” Mr Irelewuyi added.
The FRSC sector commander also mentioned that efforts were being made to tow the truck to the Central Police Station in Onitsha.
While condoling with the families of the dead, he urged motorists to ensure their vehicles met minimum safety standards before plying the road.
