Benue NMA cautions youths against drug abuse, electoral violence
The Benue chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Ushakuma Anenga, has cautioned youths against drug abuse and engaging in electoral violence.
In an interview on Tuesday, he said the actions, including vote-buying and selling, have long-term negative effects on individuals and society.
He said about 275 million people worldwide are abusing drugs, out of which Nigeria has more than 14.3 million people associated with drug abuse.
“I had cause to go and look at how many votes that our president, Muhammadu Buhari, got in the last election; it was about 15 million votes. That is like the entire youth that can change the country abusing drugs, which is huge,” he added.
He cited peer pressure and parental influence as major causes of drug abuse.
The medical practitioner said it was important for the country to hold seminars and conferences to sensitise the youths on the dangers of these issues.
On electoral violence, the NMA chairman advised the youths to build their capacity to make better choices.
