Oyan Dam fully discharged; no flood risk in Lagos: Environment commissioner

Lagos state government have asked residents to ignore a recent flood alert predicting imminent flooding from the release of water from Oyan Dam.
Tunji Bello, the state Commissioner for Environment responded to Peoples Gazette’s enquiry about the state of preparedness for floods in Lagos amidst videos circulating online of imminent danger.
The commissioner said Oyan Dam is no longer a threat to residents as the dam has been “fully discharged.”
Mr Bello also doused concerns over the probability that Ogun River, which has been a major concern to the state government, may cause a flooding disaster.
“We are not likely to witness any flooding even from Ogun River incident,” assured Mr Bello. “Oyan Dam has fully discharged already and it is not in anyway full at all.”
The commissioner added that the pressure from Ogun River which was saturated on Tuesday till Thursday has begun to calm, “hence we are not likely to witness any major incident in that axis.”
Recently, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), warned residents of 19 communities around the Lagos-Ogun border of an imminent flooding due to release of water from the overfilled Oyan Dam.
The agency listed the communities at risk as: Ketu, Alapere, Agric, Owode Onirin, Ajegunle, Alagbole, Kara, Isheri Olowora, Araromi, Otun Orisha, Agiliti, Meiran, Maidan, Mile 12, Odo Ogun, Owode Elede, Agboyi I, Agboyi II, and Agboyi III.
