Building collapses in Lagos, worker killed

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the death of an adult male in a building collapse in Ikeja.
The incident happened on Wednesday while workers were renovating a one-storey building located at 12 Aromire Avenue, Ikeja.
In a statement, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, said the deceased’s body was recovered under the rubbles by emergency responders.
The statement added that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and security operatives had been contacted for further actions on the building and the recovered body.
“The agency responded to distress calls and, upon arrival, discovered that a storey building formerly occupied by KILMS MART was being worked on by unskilled labourers resulting in a partial collapse,” it said. “An adult male reported to be a welder lost his life instantly at the scene. His remains were recovered and removed from the scene.”
According to the statement, the post-disaster assessment conducted by the agency’s LRT indicates that the building is stable and does not threaten other buildings.
The building had been cordoned off, and LASBCA and police “have been contacted for further action,” said the statement.
