The Lagos government has announced traffic diversion on Murtala Muhammed Way and Apapa Road, Oyingbo, from January 23 to March 31, for the Red Line project. Frederic Oladeinde, the transportation commissioner, said in a statement on Thursday that the traffic diversion would take nine weeks.

Mr Oladeinde explained that the closure of roads in the axis would allow the contractor to complete the construction without any inhibition during the construction of the first phase of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line project.

The commissioner explained that previous alternative routes would be maintained, and traffic on Murtala Muhammed Way would be diverted to Abeokuta Street to access Borno Way to Coates Street to link Murtala Muhammed Way again.

He said motorists could alternately access their destinations from Cemetery Street, noting that traffic on Apapa Road will be accommodated with the temporary lanes constructed before the overpass and channelled to two lanes on Murtala Muhammed Way.

The commissioner assured that the site would be cordoned off for the safety of residents. He added that emergency vehicles would be on the ground to tow broken-down vehicles along the axis.

He also stated that signages would be placed on the access roads with the traffic management authority to manage traffic flow and minimise inconveniences, reiterating the Lagos government’s commitment toward developing transport infrastructure within the metropolis.
