A Dei-Dei Grade I Area Court in Abuja on Monday sentenced a 22-year-old trader, Kingsley Isaac, to three months imprisonment for stealing two chickens worth N8,000.

The police charged Mr Isaac of Yimi Zuba, Abuja, with theft.

The Area Court judge, Saminu Suleiman, however, gave Mr Isaac an option of N10,000 fine.

Mr Suleiman also ordered the convict to pay N45,000 as compensation to complainant.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Chinedu Ogada, told the court that the convict committed the offence on March 11.

Mr Ogada said the complainant, Abdullaziz Salihu, of the same address, reported the matter at the Zuba Police Station on March 11.

Mr Ogada said on the same date at about 2:00 a.m. the convict went to the complainant’s house and made away with his two chickens valued at N8,000 without his consent.

He said the convict opened the complainant’s car and stole car parts worth N35,000 and sold it to an unknown person.

Mr Ogada said that Mr Isaac was later caught and handed over to the police for proper investigation.

He added that during police investigation and interrogation, the convict made a confessional statement.

The offence, he said, contravenes the provisions of sections 287 of the Penal Code.
