Klopp agrees to replace Nagelsmann as Germany coach

Nagelsmann resigned last week as the men’s national team coach following Germany’s shocking exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The German Football Association (DFB) has announced that former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has agreed to replace Julian Nagelsmann as head coach of the German national team.

Nagelsmann resigned last week as the men’s national team coach following Germany’s shocking exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, after the 2014 world champions were knocked out by Paraguay in a penalty shootout in their round of 32 match.

In a statement on Saturday, the DFB stated that its president, Bernd Neuendorf and vice president, Hans-Joachim Watzke, had a preliminary discussion with Klopp in New York on Friday.

During the meeting, both parties agreed on elements of a potential contract with further negotiations scheduled for next week.

“DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and DFB vice president Hans-Joachim Watzke had a first intensive conversation with Jürgen Klopp yesterday in New York about the possible takeover of the office of the national coach,” the federation said.

“In the constructive exchange, an understanding was reached on essential key points of a potential contract. The talks will continue next week,” It added.

Furthermore, the federation expressed confidence that both parties would reach an agreement but noted that any deal would depend on Red Bull GmbH, where Klopp currently serves as the head of global football, to sanction the move.

“Both sides are confident that the negotiations – subject to an agreement with Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull – can ultimately be successfully concluded.

“A possible contract must be finally decided at a joint meeting of the supervisory board and the shareholders’ meeting of DFB GmbH and Co. KG,” the DFB added.
