Septuagenarian guard jailed nine months for stealing motorcycle, money, cigarettes

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Jos, Plateau State, on Thursday sentenced a 78-year old guard, Sani Ibrahim, to nine months imprisonment for stealing cash, motorcycle and cartons of cigarettes.
The magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, summarily sentenced Ibrahim after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court however, gave the convict an option to pay N20, 000 as fine.
The convict was also ordered to pay a compensation of N400,000 to the complainant, or spend six months in jail if he defaulted.
Mr Bokkos said that the punishment would serve as a deterrent to other intending offenders.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Labaran Ahmed, told the court that the case was reported on November 24, at the” A”Division Police Station Jos, by one Douglas Kokelu.
Mr Ahmed alleged that the convict left his duty post without permission, and the gate opened for his friend to steal the listed items.
The prosecutor said the items were valued at N694,000.
The offence, according to him, is punishable under the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
