Strong earthquake shakes Montenegro

A powerful earthquake, which measured 5.4 on the Richter scale, struck Montenegro early Thursday morning.

A powerful earthquake, which measured 5.4 on the Richter scale, struck Montenegro early Thursday morning, the Institute of Hydrometeorology and Seismology of Montenegro said.

The institute stated that the epicentre was at a depth of 14km in the country’s western municipality of Niksic.

According to a press release, tremors from the earthquake were felt across the country, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

However, the institute warned of possible damage in the epicentral area, the earthquake could have been the cause of some material damage in the epicentral area, the statement said.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre initially reported a magnitude of 5.3.

In addition to the report, two weaker aftershocks registered at 3.1 on the Richter scale, were also recorded in the area.
