Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has approved an increment in the minimum wage for the state’s civil servants from N30,000 to N70,000, a few months before the expiration of his eight-year tenure.

Mr Obaseki announced the development while inaugurating the new Labour House secretariat complex, located along Temboga Road, Ikpoba-Hill, Benin City.

He said the increased wage will take effect from Wednesday, May 1.

The N30,000 national minimum wage was implemented on April 18, 2019.

Meanwhile, Mr Obaseki’s approval of the new minimum wage for Edo workers comes after various agitations by the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) and Trade Union Congress(TUC), which demanded its review due to the rising cost of living since the removal of fuel subsidy.

A recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicated that Nigeria’s inflation rate rose to 33.20 per cent in March from 31.70 per cent in February.
