The police command in Abuja on Thursday released Yushau Shuaibu after he was arrested for trying to die by suicide on July 8.

The command’s spokeswoman, Josephine Adeh, in a post on her official X handle on Friday, said Mr Shuaibu was diagnosed with anxiety, persistent worry, and fear.

The police said Mr Shuaibu was released “on bail to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju.”

Mr Shuaibu was arrested for climbing the Aso Radio mast in a bid to die by suicide.

“He was referred to the FCTA SDS for a mental assessment, which found him mentally stable. However, symptoms of anxiety, persistent worry, and fears were noted during his profiling.

“The SDS recommended that he receive further psycho-social care and support, which contributed to the decision to release him on bail,” the FCT police said.

Mr Shuaibu left a suicide note at the foot of the mast, explaining that his actions were in protest against the economic hardship being meted out on the country by the Bola Tinubu administration since assuming office on May 29, 2023, and was “on behalf of fellow Nigerians.” 

“Government should return fuel subsidy; Government should declare a state of emergency in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, and Borno on insecurity matters and take immediate action to clear terrorism in the above-listed states and the country at large,” said Mr Shuaibu’s suicide note.
