Ghana TikToker jailed after claiming President Mahama sacrificed 32 cows to win election
A Ghanaian TikToker, Camilla Alhassan, has been sentenced to one year in prison for spreading false news about President John Mahama.
Ms Alhassan, 43, was sentenced upon pleading guilty to charges on spreading false news about the president.
The Tiktoker had in last month and early July in her videos alleged that Mr Mahama sacrificed 32 cows to win the 2024 general election.
Prosecutors argued that Ms Alhassan had made a series of defamatory allegations without evidence against Mr Mahama.
The judge who presided over the case rejected plea for a lenient punishment on the ground that a proper sentence will discourage others from spreading fake news on social media.
Before Ms Alhassan, popular TikToker David Kwodwo Prah Afful, known as Kwame Nkrumah II, was also jailed for seven months after a court found him guilty of making a death threat and offensive conduct that threatened peace.
Mr Mahama made a comeback in 2024 after losing reelection in 2016, defeating Mahamudu Bawumia.
