Nigerian Army seizes 1600 bags of foreign rice in Cross River
Nigerian military says its troops operating in the creeks around the Cameroonian border have intercepted a shipment of smuggled bags of rice.
Defence media chief John Enenche Saturday said 1,637 bags of rice were brought in via a large wooden boat along Utan Iyata Creek in Cross River.
Mr. Enenche disclosed that two suspects were arrested during the clearance operation. He described their action as economic sabotage.
“Currently the suspects are being profiled and would subsequently be handed over to the Nigeria Customs Service component of Operation Swift Response South-South border drill along with the bags of rice for further action,” the military chief said.
Rice is a staple food in Nigeria whose price has soared since the government banned its importation to encourage local production. Smugglers however continue to devise means of bringing in the high-demand commodity.
