An Abuja High Court on Thursday admitted a former deputy director of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Yisa Usman, to administrative bail.

The police charged Mr Usman with character assassination and giving false information to a public servant.

Justice H.A. Musa granted him bail after he took his plea, and the prosecution also asked the court to apply its discretion.

In granting the defendant bail, the judge held that he (defendant) should be in the same administrative bail conditions granted him earlier by the police.

In addition, the court said the defendant should produce a surety who must take the registrar of the court to his place of residence.

The court further ordered that the counsel for the defendant must write an undertaking before the registrar that he would produce the defendant on the next adjourned date.

Mr Musa then adjourned the case until October 29 for hearing of the defendant’s bail application.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, N. Orji, told the court that on June 6, 2022, the defendant assassinated the character of Mabel Ishaku, contrary to Section 392 of the Penal Code.

The prosecution alleged further that on the same date, the defendant gave false information to a public servant at the JAMB headquarters, Abuja, contrary to Section 140(b) of the penal code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegation.

In the suit marked CR/654/2024, the matter is between the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Mr Usman, the defendant.
