Ibadan poly student arraigned for cultism, illegal possession of firearm

A 26-year-old student of The Polytechnic Ibadan, Oyo State, Qoyum Atobatele was on Thursday arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly being in possession of a locally made gun and belonging to unlawful society.
The defendant is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful possession of a gun and belonging to Eiye confraternity.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Akeem Akinloye told the court that the defendant and others at large on November 4 at about 7:20 p.m. at the Polytechnic Area allegedly conspired together to commit the offence.
Mr Akinloye said the defendant had in his possession one locally made cut to size fabricated gun with six cartridges.
He said the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of how he came about the gun.
Mr Akinloye said the defendant also allegedly belonged to Eiye Confraternity, an unlawful society.
He said the offence contravened section 64 (a), 430 and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.
The Chief Magistrate, Olabisi Ogunkanmi admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Ms Ogunkanmi said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the defendant.
She, thereafter, adjourned the matter until March 27, 2025 for hearing.
