The National Council for Women Societies (NCWS), Abuja chapter, has inaugurated an empowerment programme for women in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The president of the council, Hadiza Abdullahi, who disclosed this at a workshop on Monday in Abuja, said the empowerment programme, which also captured women with disabilities, was in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“As the FCT Chapter of NCWS continues to empower women and promote economic growth, it is clear that the organisation’s efforts are yielding positive results.

“With the support of the government and other stakeholders, the NCWS is poised to make a significant impact in the lives of women and communities across the FCT,” she said.

Ms Abdullahi highlighted the need for increased budgetary allocation for the NCWS, to enable the council to embark on additional programmes such as education, regular payment of subsidies, logistical support, and equipment, among others.

She also requested additional financial support from the government to enhance the empowerment programme and accommodate more beneficiaries across FCT.

While highlighting the council’s commitment to women’s rights and welfare across Nigeria, Ms Abdullahi said that the council would not relent until all its set goals were achieved.

“Established in 1958, NCWS aims to unite women and advocate for their progress in the country.

“The network today includes vocational training and financial grants, aligning with the NCWS’s mission to alleviate poverty and empower women at all levels,’’ she said.

Ms Abdullahi expressed gratitude to corporate organisations and individuals who contributed to the success of the programme.

In her address, the Mandate Secretary, Women Affairs Secretariat, FCT, Adebayo Benjamin-Laniyi, emphasised the importance of women empowerment and self-sufficiency in the country.

She said that empowerment was not just about providing handouts but equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.

According to her, empowering women is not just a gender agenda but a national one that strengthens communities and contributes to the country’s development.
