PSC boss seeks improved funding for police intelligence, investigation activities

The chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Hashimu Argungu, has called for improved funding for intelligence, investigation and prosecution activities of the Nigeria Police Force.
On Tuesday in Abuja, Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC spokesperson, said Mr Argungu made the call during a panel conversation on police leadership and accountability.
He said the Cleen Foundation organised the event for civil society representatives, policymakers, academia, leadership of the Nigeria Police Force and international partners.
The PSC boss spoke in his paper on “Reviewing External, Internal and Stakeholders Accountability Strategies and Mechanism of the Nigeria Police Force/Service.”
Mr Argungu said there was a need for the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department to establish an internal public complaints and feedback system.
The PSC boss called for established ethics for police detectives and investigators to enhance professionalism, adding that strict measures must be put in place against police personnel found in violation of human rights.
He said police officers involved in the act of torture, an offence contrary to the Anti-torture Act 2017, must be dealt with accordingly.
Mr Argungu called on the federal and state governments to review the current passive and obsolete criminal justice system at various levels in line with the current global standards.
