The minister of communications and digital economy, Isa Pantami met with United States ambassador Mary Beth Leonard in Abuja on Monday.

Mr Pantami, whose past radical Islamic views were exposed in a series of reports by Peoples Gazette, hosted Ms Leonard  at the ministry of communications headquarters in Abuja.

The issues discussed were however not made public.

“The Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy of Nigeria 🇳🇬, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami with the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard during a working today in his office, Abuja,” the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy posted in a photonews on its Facebook page on Monday.

The U.S. has been critical of Buhari in the wake of Twitter ban in Nigeria.

Both the U.S. mission in Nigeria and the U.S. government have issued statements saying the Nigerian government was stifling the nation’s democratic space, thereby hurting freedom of expression by the ban.

Aso Villa had ordered telecoms companies, which are under Mr Pantami’s supervision, to cut out Nigerians’ access to the popular microblogging site.

Nigerians have however continued to bypass the blockage via virtual private networks (VPN).
