Court remands ex-convict over alleged house breaking, theft

An Area Court sitting at Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, Kwara State, has remanded an ex-convict, one Dada Awoyemi, 24, standing trial for alleged criminal trespass, house breaking and theft.
Awoyemi, a resident of Oro-Ago Area, Ilorin, pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him.
However, the trial judge, Toyin Aluko, ordered the remand of the defendant in Oke-Kura Correctional Centre, taking consideration of his history.
The case was adjourned until February 25 for further mention.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Mayowa Samuel, told the court that one Oyeyemi Adebisi, Pastor Benjamin Adeyemo and Jimoh Omokekere, all of Lao Area, Ilorin, reported the case at Budo Nu-hu Police station, Ilorin.
Mr Samuel said that the complainants said that on December 2, unknown thief (thieves) broke into their houses and made away with an iphone X, valued N200,000 and one iphone 6, valued N100,000.
Other valuables allegedly stolen include one Itel phone valued N45,000, one standing fan, one small generator, ceiling fan and one extension box, whose value were yet to be ascertained.
The prosecutor said that on the same day, the ex-convict was arrested in the Lao area and when questioned could not give a satisfactory account of himself.
He said that the complainants suspected Awoyemi to be the person that broke into their houses.
“During police interrogation, the defendant confessed that he was released from Nigeria Correctional Centre, Oke-kura, sometime in April, on a case of theft,” Mr Samuel said.
The prosecutor said that the offences allegedly committed by the defendant contravened sections 348, 355 and 288 of the penal code law.
He pleaded for the court to grant him more time to establish the case, and prayed that the defendant should be remanded so as not to interfere in police investigation.
The defendant pleaded not guilty of the offence.
