An Ibadan Chief Magistrates’ Court in Mapo, Oyo State on Thursday remanded a 43-year old woman, Yinka Kabiru, in a correctional centre for allegedly stealing rice and clothes valued N100,000.

Kabiru, whose residential address was not given, is facing a two-count charge of false pretence and stealing, to which she pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, O.O. Latunji, ordered the defendant to be remanded at the Agodi Correctional Centre following her inability to fulfil the conditions for bail.

Ms Latunji had granted Kabiru bail in the sum of N100,000, with two reliable sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the matter until March 5 for hearing.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Inspector Oluseye Akinola, told the court that Kabiru committed the crime in November 2024, at Opeyemi-Idiaro area of Ibadan.

Akinola said that the defendant fraudulently obtained a bag of rice and a ready-made dress valued at N85,000 and N15,000 respectively, from the complainant, Rukayat Adewale.

“She promised to pay by the end of November 2024, but she disappeared. She was later apprehended by the police following intelligence from concerned neighbours,” he said

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 419 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap. 38, Vol. II, Law of Oyo State.
