Scavenger arraigned over alleged theft of air conditioner

A 20-year-old man, Shuaibu Haruna, was on Thursday, arraigned before a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, over an alleged theft of air conditioner worth N400,000.
Haruna, a scavenger who resides at Agwan Hausa Karmo, Abuja, is being charged with criminal trespass, conspiracy, house-breaking and theft.
The Police Prosecutor, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Armayua Aliyu of No 11 Yakubu Dogara Crescent, Karmo, Abuja, reported the matter at the Karmo Police Station on May 6.
Mrs Nwachukwu said that Haruna conspired with his friend, Mustapha Mohammed, and trespassed into the complainant’s compound.
He said that they stole two indoor LG air conditioners valued N400,000 in the process.
The police prosecutor said that the defendant made confessional statements during police investigation and interrogation on the matter.
Mr Nwachukwu said that the offence contravened Sections 97, 348 and 288 of the penal code.
The Chief Magistrate, Musa Jobbo, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000, with a surety in like sum.
Mr Jobbo ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must produce reliable means of identification.
The chief magistrate adjourned the matter until July 16 for hearing.
