The United Kingdom (UK) Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advisory for Nigeria.

In a statement on Wednesday, the FCDO warned British nationals to avoid 23 states in Nigeria.

According to the FCDO, the warning became important to avoid the risks of being involved with illegal drugs, including cannabis.

“This includes the risk of arrest if you are found carrying drugs when transiting,” it said.

It listed the states to include Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, and Bauchi in the North-Eastern part of the country.

Others include Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the North-Western part of Nigeria.

FCDO also advised against visiting Niger, Kogi, Plateau, and Taraba States in the North-Central part of the country.

It, however, advised against travel to riverine areas of Abia, Delta, Bayelsa, Anambra, Rivers and Imo states in the South-East and South-South parts of Nigeria.

“No travel can be guaranteed safe,” it said.

The FCDO further noted that “if you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance. Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities, and expenses in an emergency.”
