The Court of Arbitration for Sport, CAS, rejected the appeals of Nneka Ogwumike and Elizabeth Williams earlier today.

Both women had filed for a provisional allowance that would allow them to be on the Nigerian team’s roster for the Tokyo Olympics pending when a hearing could occur but the court ruled that they had played for the U.S. team too long.

Basketball’s governing body stood by the decision saying, “FIBA acknowledges today’s decision at the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) to reject the request for provisional measures.”

Ogwumike’s sister Chiney, already granted the opportunity to play for Nigeria, applied to be granted the ability to play in the Olympics as a naturalised Nigerian citizen but CAS denied that as well because their other sister, Erica, took the lone slot for naturalised citizens on the roster.

Nneka was hoping to make the U.S. team for the Olympics but was left off the roster before she decided to gain eligibility for Nigeria.
