Defending champions Liverpool displayed another dramatic Premier League classic at St. James’ Park, snatching a 3-2 victory over Newcastle with a stoppage-time strike from teenager Rio Ngumoha.

The Reds entered the clash aiming to build on their 4-2 opening win over Bournemouth and improve their away form from last season. Newcastle, meanwhile, were seeking their first home victory of the campaign after a goalless draw with Aston Villa, and hoping to end a 17-game Premier League winless run against Liverpool.

Ryan Gravenberch opened Liverpool’s account with a spectacular goal just outside the box, marking his first goal for the club and the first of the campaign, set up by an assist for Cody Gakpo.

Minutes into the second half, Eddie Howe’s side suffered a setback as Newcastle lost Anthony Gordon after a referee review for a reckless tackle on Virgil van Dijk, leaving the hosts down to ten men.

Soon after, the Reds doubled their lead when Ekitike powered in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box. It also marked the third in three games for the young striker and Gakpo’s second assist of the night.

Ekitike’s strike made him only the fourth Liverpool player to score in his first two Premier League appearances, joining Nigel Clough (1993), Milan Baros (2002), and Daniel Sturridge (2013).

The action resumed with the hosts’ refusing to go quietly as their captain scored to breathe life back into the contest with a header through an initial long throw-in, which helped Livramento curl a cross for the Brazilian.

Minutes close to the 90-minute mark, Newcastle completes the comeback with a long ball from the back, which substitute Osula finds the back of the net to calm the 10 men.

In added time, as Arne Slot added attacking options, 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha was brought on for Gakpo.

This transformed into a thrilling moment as the youngster found the back of the net after Mo Salah’s impactful low cross across the box from the right, with Szoboszlai stepping over to calmly set up Rio to become the 100th-minute saviour.

He also became the fourth-youngest scorer in Premier League history (16 years, 361 days), behind James Vaughan (16 years, 270 days), James Milner (16 years, 356 days), and Wayne Rooney (16 years, 360 days).

The Reds will face Arsenal next. Eddie Howe’s side will play against newly promoted Leeds.
