At least four people have been killed as protests against lawmakers’ housing allowance and other President Prabowo Subianto’s government policies rock Indonesia.

Fadli Tahar, the acting head of the Makassar Regional Disaster Management Agency, confirmed that three workers who jumped out of a torched government building died.

According to Mr Tahar, another bystander mistaken for a security officer who was attacked by the crowd also died.

The protest, which broke out on Monday in Jakarta, has spread across other cities, lingering until Saturday as protesters and police clash.

Hordes of protesters converged outside the headquarters of the elite Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) in Jakarta, while some gathered at East Java police headquarters.

The protests come as Mr Prabowo, who assumed office in October 2024 to lead the Asian country of 284 million people, has yet to mark a year in office.

Mr Prabowo cancelled a planned official trip to China to attend a military parade commemorating the end of World War II next week.
