UN Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the release of the last living Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip on Monday.

Mr Guterres, on X, said he was “profoundly relieved” that the individuals, who had endured “immense suffering,” had regained their freedom and would soon be reunited with their families.

The UN chief reiterated his call for the return of the remains of hostages who were killed in Gaza.

He urged all parties to build on recent progress and honour their commitments under the ceasefire to “end the nightmare” in Gaza.

Mr Guterres added that the UN supported all efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and alleviate the suffering of civilians.
