A huge crowd converged at different points in the U.S. on Saturday for the “No Kings” protest against Donald Trump’s government and its policies.

The protests come amid a government shutdown over disagreements on Democrats’ push for the extension of expiring health care subsidies and the restoration of Medicaid cuts enacted in Mr Trump’s tax cut policy.

A large number of protesters across Chicago, Washington, DC, New York’s Times Square, Atlanta, and other major cities of America waved placards with inscriptions: “ICE OUT” and “Immigrants Make America Great,” in opposition to Mr Trump’s immigration policies.

Top Democrat members have endorsed the protests, charging Americans to hit the streets in protest against Mr Trump’s immigration policies and deployment of the military to enforce deportation in Democrat-run states.

In Washington, DC, on Saturday, Democratic lawmaker Bernie Sanders said, “This moment is not just about one man’s greed, corruption, or contempt for the constitution.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, and former Vice President Kamala Harris endorsed the protests.

“In our country, the power is with the people. Tomorrow, October 18, I encourage you to join your neighbours in peaceful protest at a No Kings event,” Ms Harris said in an X post, mobilising for the protest on Friday.

Since he returned to power in January, Mr Trump has embarked on a vehement deportation and border control policy to check the influx of immigrants into the country. So far, over two million have been deported from the U.S.
