NNL: Sunshine Stars defeat Gateway FC, seal first home victory

Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure on Saturday secured a 2–0 victory over visiting Gateway Football Club of Abeokuta in their Matchday Two encounter of the 2025 Nigeria National League (NNL).
The match, played at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure, ended goalless in the first half, with the home side fluffing most of its chances.
Sunshine Stars’ Opeoluwa Olufemi broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute of the second half, before substitute Michael Olalusi doubled the lead in the 76th minute.
Speaking with sports writers after the game, Sunshine Stars’ head coach, Bobola Akinfolarin, thanked the fans for their unwavering support.
He assured them that the team would continue to work hard in subsequent matches.
“I am happy with the result; we created more chances, and we wanted the victory more than our opponents, and we got what we deserved,” he said.
Also reacting, the chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Divine Ogbonaya, said the club would not relent but remain focused on achieving its ultimate goal at the end of the season.
Gateway FC coach Ayo Filani declined to speak with sports writers after the encounter.
Sunshine Stars will face Inter Lagos on Matchday three of the NNL.
