U.S. revokes 85,000 visas of Nigerians, other nationals
U.S. authorities, on Tuesday, announced that 85,000 visas belonging to foreign nationals, including some Nigerians, have been revoked.
The U.S. Department of State made the announcement in a post lauding President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
“85,000 visa revocations since January,” the Department of State said, giving an update on visa revocations carried out so far.
The figure covers all visas revoked since January, when Mr Trump assumed office for his second term, till date.
The Department of State said visa revocations under the Trump-led government would continue and would not stop anytime soon.
“President Trump and Secretary Rubio adhere to one simple mandate, and they won’t stop anytime soon,” the Department of State said.
The update comes as Mr Trump, upon assuming office, vowed to lead the largest deportation drive and crackdown on illegal immigrants in the United States.
Tuesday’s update shows that an additional 5,000 visas were revoked in the past one month, bringing the total number of visas revoked to 85,000, up from 80,000 in November.
In November, the Department of State cited assault, theft, and driving under the influence among the major reasons for the visa revocations.
Other reasons include terrorism, supporting terrorism, public safety threats, and overstaying visas.
