La Liga side Barcelona, on Saturday, announced that the club has officially withdrawn from the Unify League, formally known as the European Super League project.

The club disclosed this in a statement, noting that it has formally notified the organisers of the league and clubs involved that Barcelona are no longer moving forward with the project.

“FC Barcelona hereby announces that today it has formally notified the European Super League Company and the clubs involved of its withdrawal from the European Super League project,” the club said.

The Unify League is a breakaway league proposed in 2021 to rival the traditional UEFA Champions League, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Manchester City immediately signing up to join the project.

Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, Tottenham, Juventus, Liverpool, AC Milan, Inter were the remaining founding members of the proposed league.

The decision immediately attracted criticisms and protests from football fans across Europe, prompting the majority of the clubs to back out of the project with only Barcelona and Real Madrid.

However, Barcelona’s confirmation of their withdrawal on Saturday meant Real Madrid are now the only team still involved in the Unify League.
